Social Media schooling
The Social Media Spotlight
Social Media schooling
From Social Media related courses, to its use as a research and study tool, Social Media is now firmly ingrained in education systems across the globe.
Media Bistro has provided an Online Colleges infographic of a Teacher’s guide to Social Media.
Some interesting points:
- Two-thirds of schools and educational institutions use Social Media during class, with YouTube the platform most commonly used.
- Facebook and LinkedIn follow, with Twitter being relatively unused as an educational tool.
- 90% of educators have used Social Media either in class or in relation to their lesson planning and research.
- While Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn are all platforms used in relation to teaching, staff said they use them personally. Blogs, however, are used more for professional than personal reference, as are Wikipedia and SlideShare.
Social content was not just viewed in class, teachers also use it to post study content and informative links; assigned sites and clips for students to view as part of their learning; and even had students post as part of their studies.
Rather than “The three R’s”, it’s now a case of “The four B’s”:
- The book
Facebook is used to create an open and visible communication path for classes, so that study groups, meetings, assessment and exam reminders, and helpful links could all be posted via Facebook pages.
- The bird
Twitter hashtags were followed by classes to keep up to date on current events and issues, and follow relevant Hashtags in order to keep up to date on current affairs.
- The board
Pinterest is used to compile online presentations.
- The blog
Classes or departments have their own blog sites, encouraging students to post entries on relevant topics, classes and studies.
- Twitter joke trial man wins appeal
- Facebook Q2: 955 million monthly average users, 543 million mobile monthly average users
- Only 30 of the 264 world leaders on Twitter do their own Tweeting [Study]
- Apple considered investing in Twitter [Report]
Creating Socially savvy students is a logical step towards integrating Social awareness and learning into mainstream education.
